Angkor Thom is the large temple city designed by Jayavarman VII. It is surrounded by a moat and a wall. It can be entered via five roads leading to five gateways: two in the eastern city wall, and one in the northern, western and southern city walls. The balustrades on either side of the road are shaped as the world snake, that plays a role in the mythical production of the water of life. Demons carry the snake on the right side (see picture 1, below) and gods on the left side (see picture 2, below). Long avenues lead to the *Bayon*, the centre of the city (see picture 3, below).
