Lamphun is situated c. 25 kilometres to the south of Chiang Mai. It was an important centre of Mon culture from the 7th to 13th century. Wat Kukut, situated in the compound of Wat Chama Devi, is a typical example of a Mon structure surviving from this period. Other Mon remains are found at Wat Phra That Haripunjaya in the centre of the town (see map).
