Phanom Rung

Phanom Rung is situated 112 km southeast of Nakhon Rachasima and 64 km south of Buri Ram (see picture 1, below). It was built in sand- stone and laterite and dates from the 10th to 13th centuries. A long avenue leads up to a staircase and a terrace with railings ending in 5-headed mythical snakes (nagas) (see picture 2, below). A gateway opens on the central courtyard containing the main sanctuary (see picture 3, below). The lintel over the eastern porch of the main sanctuary comprises two parts (see picture 4, below). The upper part depicts a ten-armed dancing Siva (see picture 5, below) and the lower part Visnu floating on the ocean while sleeping on the world snake (see picture 6, below).
