THAILAND

Various ethnic groups have had a cultural impact on Thailand: most visibly the Mon, the Khmer, and the Thai. The Mon were predominant during the 6th to 11th century, but managed to hold sway in Lamphun until the 13th century; Khmer inspiration was most influential during the 11th to 13th century. Among the most impressive Khmer remains are those in Northeast Thailand. Various Thai kingdoms came into being from the 13th century onwards. One is the Lanna Thai kingdom which was the dominant power in North Thailand from the 13th to 16th century. Its capital was in Chiang Mai. (See map).
